U.T.O.P.I.A. Seattle (United Territories of Pacific Islanders Alliance) was born out of the struggles, challenges, strength, and resilience of the Pacific Islander LGBTQI community. Since 2009, UTOPIA has worked to address the barriers, challenges and experiences of Queer, Trans and Gender Diverse Pacific Islanders (QTPI or “cutie-pie”) who face pervasive racism, homophobia and transphobia in ways that impact their safety, health, sense of wellness, and their desire to build a positive future. We are a Fa’afafine and transgender-led, queer people of color- led, member-based organization, and our work is driven by a deeply dedicated community of QTPI. UTOPIA provides front line support and advocacy to people facing violence, harassment, discrimination, severely limited work opportunities, and decriminalization. The soul of our work is our connection with our community, the relationships we build and the cultural experience we share. Cultural alignment is a core principle of our work, and our cultural identity plays a big role in our decision-making and organizing. We provide a sacred space to support and celebrate 2SLGBTQIA+ diversity, visibility, and connection.


Position Overview


UTOPIA is seeking a culturally aligned qualified Communications Coordinator to manage all communications, working collaboratively with the Executive Director & staff team, and bring ideas and initiative to the position. They will develop but also implement our communications strategy across a number of platforms. Our communications goals include growing membership, advocating on behalf of UTOPIA, and driving participation in events and our programs.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities Communications


  • Manage UTOPIA Seattle’s brand, including brand integrity and visibility across the organization, and training staff on brand and messaging standards.
  • Design, edit and publish UTOPIA Seattle’s print and electronic communications including e-newsletters, annual reports, advocacy alerts, research reports, other publications and collateral.
  • Serve as quality control and editor on print materials and website.
  • Manage performance, security, payment systems and data management.
  • Manage, update, and strategize all UTOPIA’s social media platforms, design, and content development for website and social media to meet the current work plans and overall mission of the organization.
  • Create, develop, and integrate graphic and visual design, digital content management, digital advertising campaigns, video, event sign up, member sign up with tiered fee, email marketing, volunteer recruiting and sign up, donation and call to support.
  • Collaborate with Operations Manager and Executive Director to grow UTOPIA Seattle’s membership and increase participation programs and events.
  • Manage Marketing and promotion for all of UTOPIA’s events including the bi-Annual QTPI Retreat.
  • Track progress and effectiveness of communications and marketing activities.


Public & Media Relations


  • Promote UTOPIA Seattle to the nonprofit sector, policymakers and public.
  • Develop and manage content and messaging about UTOPIA for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop and carry out media strategy, including developing and driving media calendar, media relations and tracking press coverage.
  • Act as a key liaison between UTOPIA Seattle and media contacts throughout Washington State.
  • Promote UTOPIA Seattle and its staff in the media.




  • Support and coordinate with other programs, including participation in annual retreat or other key events.
  • As a member of the UTOPIA Seattle staff team, work on special projects throughout the year.
  • Represent the organization at events, which may include some travel throughout Washington State.


Time Commitment


  • Full time 40 hours/week.
  • Weekly schedule is Monday through Friday, at 9:00am – 5:00pm, but hours can vary.
  • Willingness to adjust hours to accommodate the needs of the job.
  • Must be available some nights and weekends.
  • Must be available for special events and training.
  • Must be able to travel throughout Washington and out-of-state.
